Clarity of Distance Learning PGDBA, PGDHRM and 1/2 years PG Management Programme (Distance mode)

without any prejudices, CAIIB is definitely more valuable than MBA for the public sector bank and nobody has told that only MBA has value. The whole things are taking wrong turn specifically those who have done PGDBA from SCDL. Well, CA, ICWA. CPA, CFAs is not MBA but it has more reputation and acceptance due to its own genuineness and curriculum. SCDL does not stand as equivalent to MBA where specifically MBA is a criteria. (if somebody says Diploma in management from DEC approved institute is a complete different issue). @AjayHyd to answer your query, it depends on institute. If the institute mentions on your certificate MBA programme of 2 years and if such university is approved by UGC and as well as DEC then it is valid. The recent ambiguity was with Assam Down Town University (Actually it is a private university and established through state legislature like the universities in Chhatisgarh where Supreme court declared all those Chhatisgarh university as ultra vires and degree offered them are invalid (UGC never did so and on PIL of Prof Yashpal it happened) when I asked them about the acceptance of 1 year Exec MBA as equivalent to 2 years MBA, they denied and told that it will not be accepted as equivalent to MBA. But I guess in case of Alagappa, Annamalai, Bharthiar or Bharti Vidyapeeth, if they show it as a lateral entry and the degree programme is of 2 years duration they it may be accepted as a 2 years MBA programme. Please also note that specifically MBA nomenclature is not the criteria. None of the distance learning PGDBA, PGDHRM are equivalent to MBA (As AICTE as well as Association of Indian Universities have not granted them equivalence) but full time 2 years PG Programme in management from AICTE AND AIU APPROVED/ EQUIVALENCE granted institute stands equivalent to MBA/ 2 years post graduate programme in management. Such institutes are Welingkar, NMIMS, IIMs, NITs etc. To emphasise on my point again, please note that full time management programme from Symbiosis, IMT, NMIMS, Welingkar has a strong value in the job market but the distance learning has no value due to its methodology, evaluation and knowledge of the candidate. Government/ public sector is different thing as they do not bother about quality and knowledge, they are based on year of experience, paper you produce (the degree, diploma DEC stamped paper which can be scrapped anytime with another PIL in honourable Supreme Court of India) however in private sector, it matters a lot.

Symbiosis has brand name, not SCDL please make note of them. P "Is SCDL PUNEs' PGDBA is valid Degree as compared to full time PGDBA ? I have completed TWO years PGDBA IN MARKETING MANAGEMENT FROM SCDL,PUNE.I wish to go for PHD. IS THIS COURCE IS EQUIVALENT TO MBA FOR JOINING THE PHD OR ANY HIGHER DEGREE FROM DISTANCE LEARNING ? ARE SCDL IS PRESTIGIOUS INSTITUTE IN MARKET TO GETTING GOOD JOB/PLACEMENT ? KINDLY GIVE YOUR RESPONSE IN DETAIL."

So the answer is:
No, it is not comparable to full time PGDBA of intitute like IIM, ITM, IMT NITIE and other renowned institution
2. You cannot go for Ph.D as SCDL self has mentioned that it is not equivalent to an MBA and as per the UGC guideline and mandatory requirement, to do Ph.D you must hold masters degree in relevant subject with at least 55% marks
3. Similarly, he cannot do any higher degrees too
4. No, in the market on the basis of SCDL degree, you cannot get a job. you will get it on the basis of your own talent. Yes, if you do a full time MBA from top at least A+ grade institute, it may help you to find placement.

and please note that all the colleges offering part time or distance learning MBA clearly mention that job / placement offer is not available for part time or distance learning institute as this course is meant for working professionals.

One example may solve your burning query:
1. To pursue MBA from IGNOU, you must be a graduate with certain condition. If you are not a graduate and has 5 years experience, you can appear only for Diploma in Management
2. To pursue PG Diploma in Management through distance mode from Welingkar, SCDL, you should be a graduate or Diploma or +2 with 5 years experience
3. As per the Supreme court direction, to pursue a post graduate programme, you must be a graduate of minimum 3 years duration (The issue came when few universities in the country started offering masters to those people who were not graduate but they had completed 21 years age) and after that all institute stopped offering these PG courses and made it mandatory to have graduation.

But the blunder in part of of SCDL, Welingkar still going on. Non graduate cannot pursue PG programme and since they are offering it for non graduates too (please note that 3 years polytechnic Diploma is considered as = +2) it cannot stand as equivalent to MBA programme

      2. University of Madras
      3. Bharti vidyapeeth
      4. IGNOU

All of them are good and recognized

Since SCDL is not a university you cannot get any exemption or relaxation in duration of the MBA course

  2. Dear Mr. Govind,

Thanks for the insightful blog. I have few queries.
    1) How valuable or credible is a UGC-DEC approved distance learning degree?
    2) Is a PG diploma holder from distance learning eligible for pursuing PhD?
    3) Is a distance learning MBA degree holder (UGC-DEC approved) eligible for pursuing PhD?

    1. 1. If it is from good institute with quality learning then only useful and always do it from a university not from a institute like SCDL, Welingkar, IMT, MET etc.

      2. No, only MBAs and post graduate (clearly mentioning word masters like Masters of Business Administration, Master of Arts etc) with minimum 55% marks are eligible to pursue it

      3. Yes, they are eligible for Ph.D subject to: They have scored minimum 55%, (60% for IITs) and cleared RAT (Research Aptitude Test ) of respective institute or NET/ SLET

  4. Dear Mr. Govind,

I am greatly thankful to you for your suggestions as I am myself trying to do an MBA course and was unable to take a decision regarding from where I should do it. I have selected Pondicherry University. I have only one question. As per DEC list, the approval of this university is upto 2012-13. Can I still enroll for MBA course from here? Will it be still valid in the coming years or would the university renew its approval in coming years?

Please help in taking the decision.

    Thanking you

  6. Hello, I was planning to enroll for a distance learning PGDM Finance HB from Wellinkar, but you are saying that it has no value?
Which other colleges do you recommend? (Preferably withouth entrances or work exp).
I have just finished my BCOM. And would like to do something in Finance. Therefore a college with placement opportunities as well.

    What do you suggest?

    1. for a fresher, a distance education does not help. And a college admitting student without entrance examination definitely cannot place its students.
Still you may check IBFI, they have courses related to banking and it is a full time course. You may also check GEMS B school who are confirming job on joining MBA programmes from them, but do a proper due diligence

    1. Please note, welingkar is not a university and it is just awarding a Diploma which is not equivalent to any degree. It cannot offer any course outside its campus in Matunga

  9. Govind Ji, you mean to say doing distance course from welingkar, IMT and NMIMS is shear waste of time and there is no value for this certificates in corporate world.
2.If one lives in aboard and wanted to pursue the Master course from India staying Abroad. Is it possible ?.
    3. There is huge confusion in our distance education - I'm sure many wasted there time and money for worthless certificate. Sometimes it make me feel there is no second chance who wants to pursue there dreams without breaking the banks and jobs.
    Thanks Mcky

  14. Hello Govind, I work and live in East Africa. I am interested in an MBA in Finance on online distance learning mode from an Indian University. I would like to pursue this without having to step into India throughout the study period. Which universities in India would you recommend for me to consider? Remember, I intend to study and do exams from Uganda online throughout. Thanks.
