How to choose a distance learning MBA

Hi,
I know this one of the most asked question. As many of the working professionals are worried. As a working professional we think that if we get any MBA or PG Management programme, it help us to get a better job and also allow us to get promotion and a better position which is unfortunately not. Yes, an MBA helps becuase in case if your team member/ reportee is more "qualified" than you then the company feel hesitant to promote you. The HR has a challenge and even I have observed this common issue and hence a company want you to upgrade your qualification. I do not feel any wrong on this. However, does this mean should we opt any management programme or any institute?
Beware, you will be in trouble. Because the institute may be selling its brand name but not giving an MBA to you and in most of the cases, the qualification you are receiving may not be equivalent to an MBA. I completely agree that alone MBA does not make you a great manager, the most important factor is your own ability and quality. MBA can just help to extend your knowledge. The attributes for success is application of mind, knowledge, decision making ability and understanding.

Well, coming back to the main point how to choose an MBA programme, I suggest that first of decide why do you want to do an MBA- for promotion, to have an MBA tag? for higher education and research? For knowledge?

Just for namesake, you can do it from anywhere even from a fake institute who offers MBA in 3-6 months but please note that the world is very clever. Even you add MBA in your resume, the world will ask- from where... so avoid such institutes. Also, please note that opt for part time/ Executive/ Distance MBA only if you are working and have around 2 years experience. If you are a fresher, never opt for a distance/ part time/ executive MBA as it will not help you to get a job. Also note that none of the college offer placement support for distance learning/ executive/ part time students, you have to search a job by your own.

So, how to choose an institute? My answer is as follows:

1. The faculty should not be only from teaching background (Must have on job experience so you will get better knowledge on what is happening in the industry)
2. The faculty should have vast industry experience
3. The faculty should have good communication and language command
4. The entirely distance learning MBA is of no use, it must have compulsory lecture and attedance
5. It must be approved by UGC and it must be from either a state or central university
6. It must have case study method and evaluation should be based on case study too.

So consideting this, I feel following institute's MBA in distance mode is preferred
1. IGNOU
2. Pondicherry University
3. Anna University
4. University of Madras
5. Evening MBA of JNTU Hyderabad
6. Evening MBA of FMS, Delhi
7. Part time MFM, MHRM, MMM etc. of University of Mumbai from only following institutes: Welingkar, JBIMS, KJ Somiayya etc. not from all colleges

8. Evening MBA programme of University of Madras
10. Part time Diploma in HRM from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (although it is not equivalent to MBA but lecture delivery method and knwledge provided is same as of full time student and holds good market value however you cannot do Ph.D or any other research courses on the basis of this programme)

I strongly recommned to people that first of all they should go for a part time or executive MBA programme from reputed institutes only. Please do not go for a fully online/ distance learning MBA programme it will add no value to your portfolio.
I strongly do not recommend following programme and institute
1. Any PG Diploma programme offered by SCDL (Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning) such as PGDIT, PGDBA, PGDHRM etc.
2. Any PG Diploma / Diploma in management programme offered under distance learning by Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai
3. Any Exec. MBA offered by ITM, Kharghar and any other ITM throughout the nation
4. MBA from Madurai Kamraj University, ICFAI, Sikkim Manipal University etc.
5. Any PG Diploma in management offered throgh distance learning mode by any institute.
6. Wigan and Leigh college (WLC)- Because I found their quality iss very poor. One of my earlier reportee had no basic knowledge of the HR function and had no ability to take smallest decision as business HR

The reason is SCDL, Welingkar and other distance learning institute's PG Diplomas are not equivalent to MBA and their evaluating method is such that even a 10th standard can pass such exam. So it is useless.

what about Masters Program in Business Administration with Specialisation From ITM

    1. Earlier their degree was not approved and not from university however now they have established their own private university so you can go ahead for it.

However, the degree cost is very high and for distance learner/ executive MBA there is no placement assistance. Better look for alternative institute which is more reputed and save your money too.

  5. Hi Govind,
    > Are there any scholarships for MBA programs in Welingkar, or any general scholarships for aspiring MBA students?

    > I also want to know your views about E-MBA programme from Pillai's Institute of Management, New Panvel, Maharashtra.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hi
No, no such scholarship is available. Welingkar offers MMS from Mumbai University which is cheaper compared to its PGDM and has good reputation too.
The MMS fee is around 230000 per year. The PGDM fee is approx 330000 per year.
Placement and demand is better for MMS compared to PGDM and your average salary can go approx 7 lakhs per annum (estmated) for MMS and much lower for PGDM

Considering this you may opt MMS and can take education loan which you need to pay only after starting from 6 months after completion your MMS

The other option is MBA from FMS (Faculty of Management Studies), University of Delhi. It is much ahead of Welingkar and in the league of IIM. Surprisingly the fee is just 10480 per year (lesser than normal graduation fee) so you even need not to bother about scholarship or loan. Average salary of FMS MBA grads are around 15 lakhs per annum.

Getting to Welingkar MMS is tough and to FMS Delhi is toughest

Welingkar MMS admit students on the basis of Maharashtra State MBA CET (easier compared to CAT) and FMS admit through CAT and your percentile in CAT must be more than 98 (not in graduation).

Pillai is worst, never think about it. It does not have any ranking and placement too. Instead better start to do job now and pursue executive MBA later

Please suggest me any good institute for specialization in marketing or e-business. (IGNOU was good but it will take entrance exam in july so i have wait for 6 months. I was looking for Welingkar PGDM-DLP but according to you it is not good)

    1. Hi Sagar,

Fisrt of all Welingkar's PGDBA_ DLP is not a MBA programme It neither has corporate value nor academic. It is just trash of paper
You can do MBA in distance learning from following institute
Pondicherry University, Exam centre and study centre: Mumbai (It has compulsory lctures on weekends)

University of Madras, Exam centre: Mumbai

      Bharti Vidyapeeth

You should see their advetisement in June for admission

      Delete
    2. Thanks a lot... Doing MBA in marketing for SEO person will be good option or not? In which field i should do specialization? Please suggest

      Delete
    3. Hi
Definitely it will be a good option. See, typically an MBA programme has same structure for Semester I and II
for III and IV Semester the typical syllabus is as follows:

      Business Policy & Strategic
      Management
      Entrepreneurship Development & project Management
      Management Control Systems
      International Business
      Management
      Marketing Research
      Current Trends in Management
      Integrated Marketing Communications Services Marketing
DISTRIBUTION AND RETAIL MANAGEMENT Marketing Strategy & Relationship Marketing
Consumer & Organizational Buying Behavior Product & Brand Management
Sales Management & Personal Selling International Marketing
      Virtual Marketing
Project at the end of the course

So even if it is in distance mode if it has compulsory lectures on weekends with experienced faculty, it helps a lot. If the course is rigorous (based on case study and long essay type question, not multiple choice) it also force students to deeply think and understand the topic.
      Therefore choose the institute accordingly.
Look at the syllabus, the courses like virtual marketing, strategy, entrepreneurship are something worth and useful.
In SEO too, someone need to put lot of application of mind. Suppose, if I need to advertise this blog, I need to choose relevant information, proper meta tag. proper search engine submission and visibility then only I can gain popularity for it. With this I also need to understand in depth various concept of marketing. SO definitely the knowledge gained alongwith work experience during MBA (even a distance) is of great help.

    7. How is nmims, mumbai?

      Delete
    8. Hi
NMIMS offers both PGDBA in distance mode and executive MBA
      However please note that
PGDBA is as useless as of Welingkar's SCDLs and all, you are not going to get any knowledge
Executive MBa from NMIMS will be quite costly.

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The candidate must have minimum 3 years of work experience in the executive, supervisory or managerial capacity in a medium or large organization.

However it is very costly and the cost is almost 4.5 Lakhs and if you ask me, it does not make any sense.

It is looting. For part time MBA they do not offer any placement

    9. Hi
Yes you can go for part time MBA. However in Mumbai it is known as Master of Marketing Management (MMM) and it is a 3 years programme.
Many MBA colleges under university of Mumbai offer this and classes are usually hold between 6 PM to 8 PM everyday.
You should choose only following institutes:
JBIMS (Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies) it is amongst top 10 institutes in India.
Welingkar (please note, not the PGDM or PGDBA, you should choose only MMM)
No placement is offered to any part time management students in any college in India
Cost: Approx 2 lakhs for entire programme

      Delete
    10. Is there any institute for distance learning which have market value as FMS, IIM.

See, none of the institute has as good value as of full time management programme of IIM, FMS, XLRI, JBIMS and other top notch institutes.
But for knowledge purpose you may choose JBIMS part time MMM as faculty and pedagogy is going to remain same.

ICFAI and MIT both are wastage of money

Madras University has not started admission yet. check their website http://www.ideunom.ac.in during June anlso keep checking http://www.pondiuni.edu.in during June

Pondicherry and Madras both will cost within 50,000 for entire programme

    11. All this is silly talk. I have seen valid degree holders from well recognised engineering and management institutes in India who don't even have the elementary knowledge, leave alone the advanced knowledge. Some of the student who have got a little less marks because their parents could not afford to send them to scam classes are many a times brilliant and bright. So where is the question of quality education. This is all useless talk. Do not measure a person's competency by the degrees he is holding. Be open and start acknowledging the real knowledge and not degrees. Only then India will progress.

It offers weekend classes and an MBA from central university

The second option is University of Madras- both have good content and degree from a prestigious university, within your cost and with exam centre in Mumbai
You may choose IGNOU also but it will be tough and less acceptable compared to two universities mentioned above.

Jaro is a partner big degree scam run alongwith MGU (which is already getting a notice for violating norms). In February I had a chat with Jaro people the transcript clearly says that they are just fooling people

    1. Hi Vinita,

Not really. IMT full time has much value and acceptability however the distance learning is not treated at par with the full time programme of IMT

Again, it is costly, not equivalent to MBA or PG programme and hence not eligible for higher studies.

You only get the brand name but there is nobody taker of the brand and cost is very high.
If you plan for a PG in management, always prefer MBA over PGDBA, PGDBM

It is a PGDBA and it does not have any acceptance in academic as well as corporate
They are saying assistance, not placement (assitance- to help)

If you have good budget better prefer 3 years part time Masters in IT Management from JBIMS
      It is an evening course

Otherwise opt MBA (IT) from University of Madras/ Anna University

None of the institutes provides placement for distance and part time courses.

    1. Hi,

      Good question indeed
      1. Madras is one of the well known, oldest and one of the most reputed university hence you can go ahead with this. However, I suggest you to opt for Executive MBA as it is more practical
      2. IGNOU is a very good university but very rigorous, it takes more than 3 years to complete an MBA from IGNOU however learning and quality is better than Madras University. However, in the corporate, when recruiter here the word "open" sometime they treat it as untouchable category which is a very wrong assumption about quality of the degree.

Madras has territorial jurisdiction of Chennai and nearby area whereas IGNOU has global jurisdiction. This jurisdiction applicables only for public sector job and higher education.

I suggest you to opt Madras University or Anna University
      Both are good.

go ahead. It is good to spend money on this course.

However, if you are willing and can take 1 years break from your career, I suggest you to go for 15 months full time Executive Management Programme from IIMs (No online or satellite, only full time) or ISB.

If you are not looking for just MBA tag, rather looking for your knowledge enrichment, you may opt any of the following certification from top global universities (these courses are free of cost and even you can enroll for it now)

    4. Hi,
Distance MBA is helpful only if you are already employed (as in your case). 1.6 year is too short to shift a job unless you have a valid explanation for the same. Whenever you will apply, you will be asked to justify. I suggest you to complete 2 years at least.
Regarding job, what is your area of interest and what is your focus? On the basis of this you may decide the job.
You may continue with the same profile like customer care manager, customer support manager, quality analyst (basically in the call centre or such scenario where many customer support executive exist). If you are well versed in training and comfortable with it, you may apply for the position as a trainer (soft skills) like etiquette, communication, customer handling, grievances handling etc. You may also look job in operations department.
It depends what is of your interest, aptitude and what you chose.

    3. Hi,

      Please find reply
      1. Do the universities have affiliated centres in Bangalore city.If yes does it provide regular weekend classess for distance MBA?
Yes, they provide PCP classes which was mandatory earlier but now they have made it optional. However the weekend classes is mandatory for twinning programme.

2.Is it advisable to take admission via these affiliated centres to this university?
No, take online admission directly to the university and opt appropriate centre. visit http://www.pondiuni.edu.in

      3. I came to know that there are two ways to enroll for distance MBA in the university
      Distance mode
      Twinning Mode
What is the difference between the two modes and which one shall be the best?
Twinning is the best, In winning the lectures become mandatory and you get more learning opportunities in purely distance it becomes more theoratical

4.My main intention for doing MBA is for career advancement/better job opurtunities. Will distance MBA
from this university along with work experience from a reputed MNC help me achieve my goal?
See, the first preference should go for full time MBA from top B schools and second should go for executive MBA from top B schools like JBIMS Mumbai, XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS Delhi, Symbiosis International University Pune. Considering the overall reputation of Pondicherry and the quality of the course, it adds value to your profile and it is much better than many junk certificate/ diplomas and MBA produced by various Indian degree mills. You may also look into executive MBA offered by University of Madras.
Well, getting a good position in an MNC depends on several factors like
      1. Your own technical knowledge and ability
      2. Your past performance
      3. Communication and leadership skills
      4. PErformance at the time of interview.

      MBA just become a media

      Further,
Few organisation have their own choices like they ask for full time MBA from TIER 1 institutes only (IIM, JBIMS, XLRI, TISS, FMS, IITs etc.) whereas other organisation give preference to individual quality. So you need to decide on which organisation you are focussing to work. This becomes specially applicable to big 4 consulting organisation and few fortune 500 companies. So accordingly you may take a decision.

    4. Hi Govind,

I am thinking to opt the twinning mode for MBA by Pondicherry University.

Please let me know the last date for getting admission into MBA for 2013 batch. Is it 10th september or 30th september?

I went through "http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/content/concept-twinning-programme" where in they have said that twinning centers organize all the important tasks on behalf of the University, including the admission.
However You have mentioned that I should take the admission online directly to the university.

      1. Shouldn't I be taking admissions via these official twinning centres of the university? Is there any possibility(that you can think of) of getting cheated if i follow this approach for enrollment?

      2. Also while taking admission online university has mentioned to send the original certificates by post along with Xerox copies. They would return the originals after verification.
However I feel it is too risky to send the ORIGINAL degree certificates by post.I feel this can be avoided if I take admission via the twinning centres wherein I can go in person and get myself enrolled.
      Please share your views.

3.In twinning programms classes are held on weekends.
These centres organize the task of conducting classes during weekend.
For example In bangalore "Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College" is the twinning institution. So will the classes be conducted by teachers of this college or someone else?

4.Having attended the classes in "Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College" will my MBA degree have this college's name or it will be straight from pondichery university?

      Delete
    5. It is 30th September, usually every university extends the last date

      1. Yes, prefer to take admission directly to university and apply to the PCP centres mentioned by the university only, However, make all payment through DD only and only in the favour of the university even if you are submitting application form to PCP centre.

      2. Yes, they return the original after verification

No risk involved as they take due care

You may apply to twinning centres too. No issues

      3. No, Pondicherry University decides the faculty and they appoint. For instances in its Mumbai centre professors were well qualified (CA, LLB , M.Phil, MBA) with industry experience. I do not say all the teachers will be with exceptional quality, few you may like rest you wont (And it happens with most of the full time colleges too)

      4. It will involve name of the university only. College is just a facilitator and they get their share.

However After completing my Masters from pondichery university I wish to switch to manegerial role.

Keepig in mind my profile(After completeing MBA I will at then have 4 yrs of work experience in a technical role with a MBA degree) please suggest me as which specialization shall be the best?
I want to go for MBA in HR.Will that be a good option?

1.Does pondicherry University conducts exam and schedules classes on-time and complete the Entire MBA courses strictly within two years time Period as mentioned in their website?Has there been any batch in the past where the university delayed in completeing the course?
      Please let know

2.Does the university award a master's degree or a diploma certificate at the end of course?

3.Will there be a mention of Distance education in the degree certificate awarded by the University at the end of Course?

      Delete
    8. 1. It's conduct regular exam now awarding degree happens.only if you complete all papers with minimum 50% and above and complete project so completing degree depends on you and you only. University foes it duty by consucti.g exam on regular basis.

      2. It's MBA not the pg diploma hence if you enroll for 2 years MBA its MBA degree

      3. In all.mark sheet directorate of distance education will be mentioned but in convocation certificate it will.not be mentioned

Thanks a lot for such an informative blog. Much appreciate your efforts put on to provide a guidance to one and all willing to opt for distance education. Could you please guide me to take a wise decision related to further continue my education. I am basically from Karnataka, Bangalore. I finished my graduation in Science with PME. I am looking forward to join either MBA or MCA through distance education. I am not interested to go ahead with KSOU. I have gone through the articles which you written on various courses , statewise.

I am planning to go ahead with KSWU, Karanataka state women's university Distance education. So could you please guide me regarding the same, whether it is better to go with this or not and also its territorial jurisdiction.

This university has tied up with third party to offer distance education. In such a kind of scenario , does the degree from this university stands valid?
Please provide your valuable suggestions on the same.

    1. Hi
Karnataka State Women's University is a state university so it can offer course anywhere.
Do not go for a third party ties up institute, as it is not allowed. Apply to the university directly.
However, you should opt University of Madras if you are in Bangalore as this has centre there. Madras is much better in terms of reputation.

I contacted ICFAI Sikkim and Tripura and they said I pursue their course as they don't have territorial jurisdiction.issue in Bangalore but I don't think it is correct.

So, which university will you suggest me for pursuing MBA without contact classes? Are contact classes mandatory from UGC for an approved MBA degree?

You are right. Both of them are not telling truth.
You should opt Pondicherry University as in the first year there will be no compulsory PCP classes and in second year it is 8 weeks per semester. I think a completely distance MBA is not a good idea. in the class you get many information and hand on practical knowledge of people.

  30. Hi Govind,
You have an excellent blog on educational matters. I have been contemplating on going for a online or distance education MBA (Operations/IT/HR) but after going through your blogs, again and again, I am at my wits end as to what is going on with education in India. Let me come to my question straight...again I have posted this in another form in another page...refining my question here. I am a working professional, have 16+ experience and in IT. Now, I can't go for full time courses, what would be the next best thing? Perhaps the online MBA or Distance Education MBA. I have my evenings full, quite often, for global meetings...perhaps the reason why I am stressing more on Online, however, recognition of the degree also matters apart from quality of the course.
I believe I missed the IGNOU MBA admission for this year (2014). I am looking at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) and Pondicherry DDE. So far, KSOU has been very effective in communication and follow up whereas Pondicherry Uni has been slow. I was able to get a confirmation of eligibility from KSOU and feel confident whereas confirmation form Ponidcherry is usually after you have paid the fee. Madras Uni DDE site is down, Anna Uni DDE is not showing any centers in Bangalore.
What do you recommend? Do you have a list of recommended Unis for Distance Education (this will be really helpful for working professionals) which is also reflected by another independent study/research work (I know you have already published a list at the top of this page and hoping that list still holds good?)?

    1. Hi,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation and writing in details.
      Well,
I recommend to go ahead with Pondicherry University
Yes, I have also made a list of safest universities to pursue distance learning courses.
KSOU does not have AICTE approval and under scanner for violation. I have already filed an RTI to ACITE to provide clarity on distance education MBA, MCA and other programmes that will be of great help for all.
KSOU may be good in response but we need to be careful after their limelight for their bad deed.
MAdras is extremely bad in student response, although a reputed university.

    2. Hi Govind,
Thank you for your observation and advice. I am following up with Pondi for admission, made the journey to "spot admission" centre so that I don't have to send my Original Certificates. Twining program details say 120hours of PCP, whereas regular is around 40hours. However, I heard from "Spot Admission" that Twining is only weekend classes. Not sure what is correct, Twinning fee is almost double. Also, the admission process did not mention, clearly, how to get admission to Twinning mode. Anyway, 2 questions here...
      1. Question remains for some Institutes e.g. SCDL. It seems that their PGDBA course has attracted a decent amount of recognition from Corporates (and Quality of the Course). Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I believe you are connected well enough to see through such claims. What has been your experience and/or have heard about SCDL (Quality and Recognition - at Corporate level for making progress up the ladder, migration abroad and not necessarily higher education).
      2. Is it allowed/advisable to pursue 2 Degree courses at the same time Or 1 degree and 1 PG Diploma? I am wondering about the implication of such e.g. 2 years + 2 years=4 years education, usually, but for doing 2 at the same time (assuming the student is able to do that under Distance Education mode) - 2+2 is done at the same time, so Industry will look at 4 years or just 2 years but double Degree (assuming that there are comfortable with double degree)?

    3. Hi Samrat,
You may refer followingwebsite for Pondicherry clarity
      http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/content/admissions-2010-2011

Twinning programme's lecture will be on weekend only but it will have more lectures compared to distance education programme

SCDL's claim is false and you may refer my following blogpost
      http://blog.simplycareer.net/2011/08/people-should-not-opt-mba-pg-courses.html

      http://blog.simplycareer.net/2013/05/are-you-thinking-that-you-got-symbiosis.html

SCDL will not be accepted for Visa also as it is just considered as a training abroad
if you do an MBA you do not need to bother about 4 years degree
the total education should be 4 years or more

My question is in one of the blog , you mentioned that a stat university can not operate beyond its boundaries. But you suggested Madras , Anna university for MBA will that be valid.
Also pondicherry though central university should run study centers with their own employees in other states correct ? Then will that be valid to do MBA from this university.

    1. Hi,
There are multiple aspect. Now Pondicherry University do not have any admisison centre outside state. The admisison is online, University appoint faculty in each city and conducts exam accordingly. These faculties are paid on honorarium basis. Yes, being a central university, they have all over India jurisdiction.

One should not opt Madras and Anna University if they want to apply for government job as none of them are allowed to open study centre outside their state. For private job, they are still a good name. However, Pondicherry is always safer, so the IGNOU (but private employer may not value a IGNOU degree, however, IGNOU is best among all for quality). My suggestion is, always opt a part time MBA only as MBA cannot be learned by just reading books. A good institute put lot of efforts in presentation quality and research, case even in a part time mode. Also, AICTE does not recognize a distance MBA so if someone plan teaching career, the distance MBA obtained after 2010 has no value.

    1. Hi Rushi,
Thanks. I have already clarified in one of my blog article, anything other than full time on campus from a foreign university is not approved.
UBS is a scam, do not believe them. Cardiff Metropolitan University is a recognized university in UK but spending such a heavy money is not advisable.
A part time MBA helps you to gain knowledge but not for the placements. JBIMS is good, you may alternatively look for 15 months executive MBA from NMIMS or a part time MBA. Other alternate option is KJ Somaiya who offers MIM which is equivalent to MBA IT.
