About TISS:
Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Hindi: टाटा सामाजिक विज्ञान संस्थान; TISS) is a social sciences institute with its main campus based in Deonar, Mumbai, India. TISS also operates out of campuses in Hyderabad, Guwahati and Tuljapur (in Osmanabad district, Maharashtra).TISS was established in 1936, as the Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, the first school of social work in India. It was renamed to its current name in 1944. It was recognized as a Deemed University in 1964 [1] by the University Grants Commission of India.
TISS started out as a small institute offering a post-graduate diploma in Social Work, but has since expanded continuously in terms of educational programmes and infrastructure (see list of programs). The first director of the institute was Dr. Clifford Manshardt, who aimed to establish a post-graduate social work school of national stature that would engage in a continuous study of Indian social issues and create meaningful interventions.
Over the years, the Institute has, among other thrusts, made a significant contribution to policy, planning, action strategies and human resource development. It has done so in several areas, ranging from sustainable rural and urban development to education, health, communal harmony, human rights and industrial relations.
TISS has earned recognition as an institution of repute from different Ministries of the Government of India and various State Governments, as well as international agencies such as the United Nations, and the non-government sector, both national and international.

Is it easy to get admission into Ph.D in TISS?
No, first of all TISS has very limited no of seats and a lot of competition. Last year, I tried for it. Despite of being an M.Phil, Good no of corporate experience at senior level, a clarity on what research I want to do, clearly written research proposal and well written Research Aptitude Test, I could not make it. First of all, I felt the process is not being followed properly and rather than making good research scholars, they are focused on academia.  There are 5 seats for direct PhD and 10 seats for M.Phil + PhD integrated for human resources management. The total applicants were around 300.
Does it offer distance PhD?
TISS does not name it as a distance PhD however, if you are an M.Phil holder in the respective subject and if you have enough facilities for research at your workplace, you can pursue it from your working place and you need to often visit campus as and when required. So you may pursue PhD without leaving your job. However M.Phil+PhD integrated is full time on campus only and if you do not hold M.Phil you have to pursue research modular course for 2 semester. After that you do not need to be in the campus.

The minimum academic qualification for admission to the M.Phil programme is a Second  Class Master’s or equivalent degree in the relevant subject awarded by a recognised university in India or abroad, with at least an average of 55 per cent of aggregate marks, or a  grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point grade system of the University Grants Commission (UGC), India. In the case of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, the minimum eligibility is an average of 50 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.05.

Those in final year of masters degree
Candidates who will complete all the requirements of their final year Master’s Degree examinations by July 1, are also eligible to apply for M.Phil programme, provided they have successfully completed their first year. In such cases, admission will be provisional. I f a provisionally admitted student fails to score the minimum required mark/grade at the end of the final year examination, the offer of provisional admission will automatically stands cancelled.

An applicant with a Master’s degree in subjects other than those related to the research areas may be considered for admission to the programme, if he/she has demonstrated his/her interest in and aptitude for studying social issues.
For Ph.D in Social Work:  Individuals applying for M.Phil/Ph.D. in Social Work must have a Postgraduate degree in  Social Work.
Note: although they say that people who do not have masters in relevant subject may also apply but they do not prefer. One of my friend who is a post graduate in history and with a 2 years distance PG diploma in management from SCDL was even not called for Research Aptitude Test (SCDL diplomas hold no value and ineligible to apply for PhD, I have mentioned about it in my earlier blog post). Still, people should apply and try.

So in short, you need to be an M.Phil degree holder in the respective subject/ specialization or masters degree with 5+ years experience in teaching/ corporate job.

Those with only masters cannot apply for directly for Ph.D.

Process:
1.     Scan your all documents including photo and signature and research proposal in prescribed format
2.     Apply online. You can apply for maximum two programmes. There will be similar RAT (Research Aptitude Test) for all PhD programmes.
3.     RAT is mandatory even if you have M.Phil. degree or have qualified SET/ NET JRF/ GATE
4.     Appear for RAT
5.     Appear for interview
6.     Wait for shortlisting and then apply.

Is Research Aptitude Test really difficult?
No. They ask essay type question related to subject as well as general knowledge. I do not know what do they assess. Out of multiple questions you may write answers of your choice so you have plenty of the options. However, you need to practice writing as due to time constraint, you may not able to write all answers. Practice it well. The process is not transparent and no clarity. It is done on haphazard manner.
Last year my experience was not good. After taking RAT, they asked outstation candidates only to stay and asked rest to leave and no time told. Next day when I reached for interview in the afternoon, the hall was empty and they informed it is over. However, they organized the interview. There were 3 people who took my research interview and instead of focusing on my research proposal and how it can be useful for corporate as well as in developing management curriculum, they shown more interest in my SWOT analysis. So be prepared, those people may be more interested to know what theories you know (I do not recollect any of the management theory taught during my MBA class, I only remember how my professor taught to handle situation practically).

I have studied through distance mode throughout including my M.Phil, am I eligible to apply?
Yes, but with the condition that
The degree must have been awarded by a university approved by DEB /DEC
The course must be approved by DEB/ DEC
The degree should be of minimum 3 years and the PG degree should be of minimum 2 years duration
The degree must have been awarded without violating territorial jurisdiction.
