Talent is not enough, your visibility is more important to get a dream job

I have written several posts related to the topic including how you should use LinkedIn to enhance your career and how to manage career late Pran sahab way.

As we in HR know, some of the best roles up for grabs aren’t advertised to the public and the way to get them is to be talent-spotted.

So how do you go about making yourself a target for headhunters?

According to international executive search and outplacement business Kennedy Executive, being visible is a key factor.

“In order to be found, you must be visible – online and offline,” headhunter and business writer Jorg Stegemann wrote on the company’s website.

“Critical to online visibility are a watertight LinkedIn profile, Twitter, guest posts or publications. However, you cannot send a handshake by email and it is hard to build rapport online only. When did you last participate in a networking event?”

However, being visible isn’t enough – it’s also important to be meaningful, wrote Stegemann.

“Going to conferences is good but you will make a real impact by raising the word during the Q and A part. And if you do so, I guarantee there will be at least three people that will approach you in the coffee break and talk to you about your contribution.”

Jonathan Krogdahl, a headhunter at the executive search firm The Curzon Partnership, wrote a piece for The Telegraph in which he said that identifying expert headhunters in your industry was a good approach.

“Play the long game. When you have found and got to know the right headhunters, use every excuse to build a relationship with them.”

Having friends who can recommend you and help establish your credibility with headhunters is also useful, according to Success in HR founder and author Alan Collins.

“Even if you are not exactly what the recruiter is looking for, they will be interested that you have come recommended by somebody they respect,” he wrote.

“It’s easier than you think to get referred as recruiters pester their candidates and ask for referrals all the time. If you make it known to your contacts that you are interested in exploring the marketplace, they will be very happy to pass this on as it gives them future leverage as well.”

What are your best tips for being headhunted?
 My tips are as follows :
1. Just don't focus on your job. You should use optimal opportunities to do your and your employers branding. 

2. Take participation in forum discussions such as caclubindia, citehr, lawyersclubindia and so on and you should demonstrate your skills.

3. Do good professional networking for business as well as learning. I maximum attend MTHR events and also participate in various academic initiative.

4. Keep learning go using moocs as well as webinar. I post about them on my blog regularly.

    I have read some of your views and comments and must say you are doing a great job on guiding students.
    I was one very confused person, when i got a great opportunity to study i just simply coulndt but it is impacting me big time.
    I have cleared class 10; class 12; then i dont GNVQ Intermidiate in Business studies (one year) followed by BTEC National Diploma in Business Studies (two years) , then i got lucky getting a job in an accounting firm and then i enrolled for ACCA, I dId only one taxation paper of it as my job involved doing personal tax returns, frankly speaking that job was something i didnt enjoy but then later i got opportunity to work HR Management, i have been working since five years in the field n still enjoy it.
    Now problem is I am getting married in India and education is something which is proving to be a major hindrance.
    What will be the best education prospect for me which will add value to my experience and further enhance my skills in shortest time scale.
    Will I be qualified for an MBA? Its requirement is 10+2+3, and i have done 10+2+1+2, i am totallly confuse and stuck, please kindly advise me.
    Do I have to do Bachelors degree, do I have to do all three years, or i can start from 2 ans 3 rd year?
    or can i do a diploma in HR Management first and then post graduation of the same?
    I am sorry for all constant questions but I am totally stuck and confused.
