SHRM India Mumbai Forum Meet on 13th August 2014- The Power of Followership

 Today morning, while travelling, I had a similar discussion. He asked me, what is the requirement when you move from one level to next level?
Well, that was a difficult question to understand first and reply later. There are multiple replies on the same. In fact, I have written an article yesterday,

So, I have mentioned few of the requirement to get a dream job or to move into new career. Keeping in the line of the same, this article makes sense. 

A very simple definition is of leader is the person to whom people follow. He set examples and people trust on him.

Before moving to any leadership position, everybody has gone through different phases of their career life. They start career as an executive, they move to the next level and every level has different demands and different challenges. 

So one of the step towards being leader is following. You should start following people. You make your idol and the person is ideal for you. For me, leadership is more about learning through observation and adaptation. I have come across through many such leaders and mentors in my life. Yes, I have followed many of their qualities and I can proudly say that despite of many shortcomings, following their path has shown me the way. This learning is going to be whole life.

Effective leadership requires effective followership .You cannot be a leader and ask others to follow you unless you yourself also know how to follow. All leaders typically find themselves working as team members under someone else’s leadership for at least part of their working hours. Effective followers contribute overwhelmingly to the success of any organisation, both through their own efforts and by allowing leaders to lead. Great followers provide support to the leader when necessary, but are not afraid to provide constructive challenge and stand up for what they believe to be right.
